Sonos Releases New Soundbase

By Nate Lewis · On April 4, 2017

If you’ve ever stumbled your way through a home stereo set, you’ll understand the appeal of a soundbar. With these speakers, the hassle of multiple speakers and cables is eliminated, instead offering one neat speaker that fits neatly under a wall mounted TV. Finding a spot for a soundbar can be a bit tricky though when your tube is mounted on a pedestal or a piece of furniture, but it looks like Sonos has provided a solution.

With the recently released Playbase from Sonos, your TV conveniently sits on-top of the speaker. The Playbase is incredibly well designed, and it’s sleek, monochromatic style falls neatly into the rest of Sonos’ portfolio. At just over 2-inches tall and 28 inches wide, this guy delivers an impossibly rich sound covering everything from small trebley details to solid, chest thumping bass. The base can support TVs up to 60 inches or up to 77 pounds but larger sets with legs on both sides can usually fit over the Playbase as well.

For such a powerful speaker, the design is surprising simple with only one physical button and only a handful or touch sensitive commands on the front. Touching the Sonos logo will either play or pause music, while tapping to the left or the right will increase or decrease the volume. Swiping from left to right skips to the next track, and right to left allows you to skip back, not unlike the commands on Sonos’ Play:5. Behind the base are a few ports for power, Ethernet, and optical audio, and that’s about it.

The Playbase offers everything you’d expect from the audio masterminds. Multiroom audio support and access to 30 audio stations – including Pandora, Amazon Prime, and Spotify- are sure to be a helping hand when you’re throwing a party. If you’re looking to assemble a 5:1 surround sound experience, the Playbase is capable of wireless syncing with the Sonos Sub and two Play:1 speakers.

You can grab one here at Amazon for $699
