Take a Trip Back to the 80’s with the Nintendo Classic Mini

By Nate Lewis · On December 16, 2016

If the popularity of the summer hit Stranger Things and acid washed jeans is anything to go by, nostalgia for the 80’s is in high gear right now. While there are somethings that are best left in the past (shoulder pads, hair metal), other things will always have a place in our hearts. Nintendo was fully aware of this sentiment and knew to strike while the iron was hot. The newest release from the video game behemoth actually isn’t that new. In fact they’re reissuing 30 of their classic games on a miniature version of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

The NES Classic Mini comes bundled with an HDMI cable, a USB power cable, and a controller. It’s incredibly easy to set up only requiring you to plug the USB cable into the back of the system and connect the HDMI cable between your system and your screen of choice. It should be noted that the controller cords are a bit on the shorter side (31 inches), so if you were looking forward to sitting back on the sofa and popping in a game of Duck Hunter, you’ll probably end up cross legged on the floor or at your computer desk instead. Third party accessories are available to address these concerns but come at the expense of the consumer.

On to gaming though. The system is included with 30 classic titles:

  • Balloon Fight, Castlevania, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Galaga, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Gradius, Ice Climber, Kirby’s Adventure, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Pac-Man, Super C, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Bubble Bobble, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Donkey Kong Jr., Final Fantasy, Kid Icarus, Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, StarTropics and Tecmo Bowl.

The system’s user interface is very easy to use with a scroll-able library menu giving you the ability to scroll through the various games each presented with its original box artwork. Choosing one of the games starts it immediately. In summation, the NES Classic Mini provides you with a hefty amount of classic games that would cost a pretty penny to buy on your own through eBay and yard-sales. This lightweight and portable system is sure to give you the bang for your buck.
