The difference between an average self-published YouTube video and a professionally produced video program is a checklist of subtle elements that are almost all reasonably easy to overcome: Lighting and sound being the top two.
A third challenge – multiple camera angles and shots – has been another limitation that until now was too difficult for most to conquer. Admirably, the folks a Livestream recognized the shortcoming and have built a very thoughtful solution – the Mevo Camera.
The idea is clever – create a small camera that can shoot through one lens and then carve that shot into as many as nine virtual camera angles you can then switch between to create a more professional production. And even better still, the director controls are all presented on an iPhone or iPad for simple touch screen selection. A more professional production studio that fits in your coat pocket.
There some limitations of course. And placement of the single camera is chief among them. Given that you are effectively splitting up a single image, this multi-angle hocus-pocus is a bit of a trick after all. But for the right implementation, the results are compelling.
Engagement in the videos produced through the Mevo are greatly improved as the video presentation is switched from wide angle to close-up. And the Mevo even auto-tracks on subjects so small amounts of camera panning can also be incorporated in a production.
The best examples of the Mevo’s power are really with typical standing or sitting talking head presentations. Where in the past a single center camera on two subjects talking on a topic would slowly bore you to tears, the Mevo enables more lively cycling of wide two-shot and individual close up camera angles. This simple increase in production value goes a long way in extending short attention spans.
The Mevo camera stand only 2.5″ high and will record in 4k and stream live (it was built by Livestream remember) over Wifi or LTE at 720p. It can be mounted on a tripod and has a built in stereo microphone and an external mic jack. Included in the package is a 16GB memory card, a power adapter and a USB cable. The built in rechargeable Li-Ion battery has an estimated battery life of up to 1 hour.
