When it comes to high definition sound and style, Sennheiser may as well be the Lamborghini of headphones. The German headphone company has consistently proved its devotion to producing a pair of cans capable of impressing even the most finicky of audiophiles, from all-star producers to your local record junkie. In keeping with the company’s tradition of excellence and innovation, Sennheiser has announced its new line of AMBEO headphones, with the ability to record 3D sound – essentially virtual reality for your ears. The AMBEO Smart Surround earbuds were announced at last week’s CES 2017 conference in Las Vegas and were described as being able to to “let consumers capture and listen to binaural audio recording on their smartphones with unprecedented simplicity”.
“Today’s consumers are accustomed to capturing incredibly realistic video, producing 4K and 360-degree videos. Yet as mainstream technology makes immersive visual experiences ever more accessible, the power and emotion of this footage is too often let down by the quality of sound that these devices can capture. AMBEO Smart Surround is an innovative solution that closes this gap,” explains Dr. Andreas Sennheiser, co-CEO, Sennheiser. “With AMBEO Smart Surround we are taking the next step into the future of audio. We are inviting consumers to experience immersive sound by adding a recording earphone into our AMBEO technology program.”
For those unfamiliar with binaural recording methods, the approach captures sound from the direction and placement of human ears in order to recreate the sonic atmosphere and spatial characteristics of your environment. By doing so, you’re able to experience disorienting listening experiences like this (close your eyes for the best effect). While usually practiced using a dummy head, as seen above, the new AMBEO pair of headphones is fully portable, allowing you to share your sonic stories with your friends.
The AMBEO Smart Surround headphones also include Apple Lightening and USB-C options to work with devices such as Apple iPhones and iPads. Sennheiser will release the Ambeo Smart Surround headphones in the second half of 2017. It’s not known how much they’ll cost, but Sennheiser’s standard Ambeo VR microphone retails for the hefty price of $1,649.
