Atari fans get psyched; the company just announced a new mini console, the Ataribox.
The original Atari, Inc. launched back in 1972 and was a pioneer in arcade games, which helped shape the electronic entertainment space from the 1970s to the mid-1980s, according to Wikipedia. This will be Atari’s first product release in decades.
According to a newsletter from the company, the Ataribox will come in a couple of different color combinations: one will be black and red while the other is a throwback to the classic Atari that comes in black with a wood finish. 80s kids rejoice.
The unit will reportedly have various ports including HDMI, an SD card slot, ethernet and four USB ports. Could this mean there will be a possibility to load new games onto the unit or the ability to download games from an app store? Your guess is as good as mine, but it seems like this could be the direction the company is headed in.
A newsletter from Atari said the mini console will play classic as well as new content. Plus it will feature “modern internal specs,” according to the newsletter.
The unit was originally announced at E3 2017, but the company just unveiled the first look this past week. The release date, price and game list hasn’t been made public.
“We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, features, pricing, timing etc.,” Ataribox creators said in the newsletter. “There are a lot of milestones, challenges and decision points in front of us in the months ahead.”
Many are speculating that this product will take aim at the NES Classic Edition that Nintendo released late last year.
